In preparation for a new series of paintings for the opening on Chinese New Year, Jan 31, 2014, the Year of the Horse, I did several studies of folded horse designs.
Last week’s painting, “Qien Li Ma,” was focused on creating a dynamic abstract background that would work with the abstract nature of these folded designs. In this second painting, I wanted to focus on zhe zhi themselves. I worked with the layout to get a pleasing arrangement of background space to showcase the collection of painted horses. The background is a warm wash of orange over a graded wash of green-yellow-gold. Each horse “steps” out of its boundary which expresses the free nature of horses and leads the eye around the painting to the next horse. (Click on the image below to enlarge the painting.)
Excitement is building for the show. 6,000 likes on 45 Degree Gallery Facebook post announcing the benefit and show. I will offer a set of 3 cards designed from this painting which will be offered as a door prize. Maybe you will be the lucky winner.
